First off, if you haven't done so already, you might want to take a look at the box score from San Pedro at Buffalo, last week's game of the week. Buffalo wins 35-34 and the final quarter looks like it had to be insane for both coaches. Down 24-21 with 8:35 to play and facing 4th and 7 from his own 14 yard line, Coach Bill, in what might be described as unconventional strategy, goes for it and and fails to convert when Josh Freeman's pass to Jeremy Maclin falls incomplete. Two plays later Danny Woodhead scores his third TD of the game to stretch the Bums lead to 10. The Bills are undaunted however, and march 78 yards on their next drive, finishing it with a Freeman to Kenny Britt TD pass with 4:35 to play. Bums' KR Brad Smith returns the ensuing kick to the Buffalo 20, but San Pedro cannot make a first down and settles for a field goal making the lead 6 with 2:27 to play. The Bills' final possession starts from their own 14 but a 62 yard Nate Washington catch and run has them sniffing the red zone. Three plays later, fourth and one from the San Pedro 13, the Beach Bum D sells out playing for a run, but Freeman hits Maclin in the flat and he scampers to the end zone. When Manning could not work any magic in the final 31 seconds it was a final. The two teams combined to score 31 points in the final quarter. Newly acquired Jamaal Charles rushed for 105 yards but Josh Freeman earned the MVP honors with 249 yards and 4 TD's passing.
This week's UFE schedule is a bit light on marquee matchups, and since the real life NFL'ers are just over halfway through their season, it's a good time to check out how the 2011 rookies are faring in order to predict which UFE teams' scouting staffs might see a little extra Christmas bonus in their stocking this year. The following are the top ten players on Pro Football Weekly's current Rookie of the Year list:
Von Miller (LB) - Steele Creek, pick 1.4 Eight sacks to lead all rookies.
Cam Newton (QB) - Buffalo, pick 1.1. Josh Freeman for a 2nd round pick anyone?
Andy Dalton (QB) - Spokane, 2.9. Joe Flacco looking over his shoulder.
AJ Green (WR) - Etna, 1.3. Big Ben's pleas for WR help are answered.
DeMarco Murray (RB) - Spokane, 4.8. Everyone but Frank can now kick themselves at least 3 times.
Ryan Kerrigan (LB) - Macungie, 2.7. Has been about the only dependable player on the Redskins; can he get all their rating points?
Aldon Smith (LB) - Sheraden, 1.6. Will be welcome addition to a Mustangs' D that is giving up 2nd most yards per game.
JJ Watt (DE) - Allendale, 1.12. Ditto. Falcons have allowed the most points in the UFE so far this year.
Marcell Darius (DL) - Albany, 1.7. The Wolfpack is building an impressive stable of D-linemen.
Julio Jones (WR) - Frostburg, 1.11. C'mon Julio, stay healthy!
PFW cites the following players for honorable mention:
Mason Foster (LB) - Lenox Hill, 4.29.
Karl Klug (DL) - Allendale, 7.12.
Greg Little (WR) - BB, 2.1.
Denarious Moore (WR) - Tampa Bay, 6.18.
Patrick Peterson (CB) - Florida, 1.2.
Brooks Reed (LB) - Frostburg, 2.11
Torrey Smith (WR) - San Pedro, 3.1.
Phil Taylor (DT) - Tampa Bay, 2.2.
Muhammad Wilkerson (DE) - Lenox Hill, 2.14.
On the discouraging side of things, a few highly touted rookies have had their UFE careers get off to slow starts due to injuries:
Ras-I Dowling (CB) - Etna, 2.3. Volcanos' secondary takes a double hit with loss of 2nd yr safety Eric Berry.
Ryan Williams (RB) - Allendale, 2.13. Falcons should be ok with Ahmad Bradshaw and Michael Bush.
Prince Amukamara (CB) - Lenox Hill, 1.14. You hate to miss on a first round corner.
Leonard Hankerson (WR) - San Pedro, 2.21. Has breakout 100+ yd receiving game before getting hurt last week.
